COMMON QUESTIONS
Clear answers to common questions about this topic. Your circumstances may affect the options available, so personalised advice may be appropriate.
Mortgage Payment Protection Insurance, or MPPI, is a short-term policy intended to help meet mortgage-related payments if you cannot work due to a qualifying accident or sickness. Some policies also include involuntary unemployment. Benefits are limited by the insured amount, waiting period and maximum claim duration. MPPI is distinct from life insurance and long-term income protection.
Depending on the policy, Mortgage Payment Protection Insurance may cover incapacity caused by accident or sickness and may include involuntary unemployment. It normally pays a monthly amount linked to the mortgage payment, sometimes with an additional allowance for related costs. Exclusions, eligibility and benefit limits apply. It does not repay the entire mortgage and is not designed to cover every reason for loss of income.
Most Mortgage Payment Protection Insurance policies pay for a limited period, commonly up to 12 or 24 months per claim. Payment begins after the policy's waiting period and stops when you return to work, no longer meet the claim definition or reach the maximum period. Because a long illness can last beyond the claim limit, compare MPPI with longer-term income protection where appropriate.
Only policies with unemployment cover may pay following qualifying involuntary redundancy. Voluntary redundancy, resignation, dismissal, known or expected redundancy and certain contract endings are commonly excluded. Initial exclusion periods often apply after taking the policy. You must disclose any relevant announcements or circumstances accurately when applying.
Mortgage Payment Protection Insurance is usually designed around mortgage payments and offers short-term benefits, sometimes including unemployment. Income protection is based on a proportion of earnings and can provide longer-term support for illness or injury. It often has more detailed occupational definitions and underwriting. The products can overlap, so existing cover and the intended financial need should be reviewed.
Accident and sickness Mortgage Payment Protection Insurance may be available, but unemployment protection for self-employed people is less common and uses different definitions, such as involuntary business failure. Evidence requirements can be strict. Check exactly when a self-employed claim would be valid and consider whether income protection provides more suitable illness cover.
Many policies exclude medical conditions or symptoms that existed, were investigated or received treatment before the policy began. The look-back period and wording vary. Some exclusions can be reviewed after a symptom-free period. Fully disclose requested information and read the policy documentation, because a condition being stable does not automatically mean it is covered.
The benefit is usually capped by the mortgage payment and sometimes a limited additional percentage for related household costs. It should complement employer sick pay, savings and other insurance without exceeding policy limits. Choose a waiting period that reflects how long existing resources can support payments. Cover should remain affordable and be reviewed after a mortgage or employment change.
